My Entryway: Letting Color Back Into My Life
Why Virtual Interior Design Worked So Well for Our New Home
Moving is a lot. Even when it goes well, even when you're organized, even when you've done it before, there's still that moment where you're standing in a space that should feel like yours, staring at blank walls that stare right back, wondering where do I even start?
Where does this go? Do we even keep this? Why does this room feel so wrong, and I can't figure out why?
The logistics? I can handle those. But building a home that actually feels like something, that's a different kind of challenge. If you've ever felt that gap between "moved in" and "home," this might resonate with you.
Here's what I know about myself: I'm good at making a home function. Systems, flow, organization, that's my zone. Give me a chaotic pantry, and it's transformed by afternoon. Give me a blank entryway, and I immediately know where the hooks go and how the traffic should move. (That instinct is kind of my whole thing, like this pantry project) But layering a space with personality, color, and warmth? That's where I hand it off to the experts.
And here's the part nobody talks about enough: decorating is a real financial commitment. Furniture takes weeks to ship. Returns are complicated, sometimes impossible. A rug or console table isn't an impulse buy; it's an investment you'll live with for years. Having a designer's eye before you spend a single dollar? It changes everything.
We Loved the Bones — The Decorating Was Still on Us
When we bought our most recent home in Texas, we got lucky. The builder had worked with a local Austin-area interior designer named Jenny Cokins on all the fixed selections, tile, lighting, fixtures, hardware, flooring, and paint. Every finish already had a great eye behind it. Walking into a house where those decisions were already made well is a gift most people don't get.
(Building or renovating in the Austin area? Jenny is your person. She doesn't have a website yet, but if you send us an email, we’ll connect you with her.)
But great bones still need furniture. Art. Rugs. Lamps. Life. And that part was still entirely up to me.
Calling in the Experts
One design firm I've admired for years is Oyster Creek Studios out of Houston. I first came across founder Aryn's work through a client project, and it stopped me in my tracks. The way she blends color is so considered, never trendy, never overdone, just timeless and elegant and effortlessly alive. The clients were over the moon. The space felt like them, but the best version of them.
The best part for those of us not in Houston? They offer virtual interior design services, which means you get that level of talent without ever needing to be local. Virtual interior design allows homeowners to work with a professional designer remotely through design boards, layouts, and curated product selections, making expert guidance accessible no matter where you live.
This isn't where our family comes and goes daily, that's a different door. This is our front entryway. What guests see first. What's visible from our living room every single day. It needed to look intentional, and when we moved in, it didn't.
Bare walls. A console table doing its best alone. Not bad, just unfinished. And in a space that visible and that guest-facing, unfinished reads loudly.
How the Right Pieces Transformed Our Entryway
The entryway had all the right bones, but it wasn’t quite finished. Blank walls stretched above a lone console table; the floor felt bare beneath it, and the space lacked the warmth and presence you want from the very first room you see when you walk through the door.
Then the Oyster Creek design board arrived, and suddenly we could see it.
Soft dusty blues that feel calm and collected. Warm touches of yellow-green that bring it to life. Natural texture that keeps it grounded. A mirror that opens the space up. A lamp that makes everything glow (and makes a statement!). And a print that makes me smile every single time I walk past it.
Pieces I never would have pulled together on my own, but the moment I saw them together, I couldn't imagine it any other way.
And I actually enjoyed the shopping. Because instead of second-guessing every purchase, I already knew exactly what I needed. The design board arrived before a single dollar was spent, which, given shipping timelines and tricky return policies on big pieces, felt like an enormous relief.

They also have their own exclusive furniture collection, thoughtfully designed and crafted in Texas. These pieces are fully customizable and delivered through a white-glove experience, offering a level of quality, craftsmanship, and individuality that can be difficult to find elsewhere. The result is a home filled with pieces that not only fit your space beautifully, but feel uniquely yours.
The Honest Takeaway
Going through this process across four or five rooms did something I didn't expect: it changed how I think about design. Seeing how color, proportion, and texture work together over and over, I started to develop an eye I didn't have before. I notice things now. Am I calling myself an interior designer? Absolutely not, Aryn's job is very safe. But I love to learn, and walking away feeling more confident and curious in my own home was an unexpected gift.
I know how to make a home function. Oyster Creek helped make it feel.
If you're standing in a new space, wondering why it doesn't feel like home yet, permit yourself to ask for help. Different people bring different gifts. Design is a gift. Let someone who has it use it for you.
