10 Ways to Maximize Your Master Closet

While we’ve been navigating the last few months we’ve learned that there is a power in simply dressing for the day. Even when there is “nowhere to go”. We learned that during this time cultivating opportunities for confidence, calm and order is MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER.

Clothes have that effect on us. They can help us shift our mindset.

Organization has that effect on us. It can set a tone for our day. It can help us appreciate what we own and create feelings of calm and consistency.

Below are 10 actions that can help you create a closet that works for you!

Add The Necessities

Just because it’s how you’ve always done it, doesn’t mean it’s how it works best.

Take a few moments to observe what parts of your closet give you the most challenges. Is there a dark corner that would benefit from a battery powered light? If clothes are piled on the floor because the hamper is in another room, adding hamper in the closet might just be the solution. Don’t be afraid to go the extra mile in your closet - its a space you use daily!

Get Hooked

Sometimes the smallest additions can make the biggest impact.

One of the most common closet conundrums is clothes piling up on the floor. Add a hook to hold clothes that you’ve worn briefly but might not be ready to add to the laundry just yet. Hooks with multiple arms work the best in this situation and you can also considering adding 2-3 strong command hooks .

Invest in Organizational Product

When your system looks great you’re more likely to keep it up.

When your system looks great and items are contained and categories are separate, it makes it much easier to maintain. Click here to see our team’s product picks for the Master Closet.

Use Labels to Enlist Help

Hold ourselves accountable for the systems we’ve created.

Labeling the system you’ve created will ensure items are returned to where they belong. This may seem silly if you only 1-2 people are using the space but trust us, labels add accountable (even for ourselves) and will keep you from accidentally forgetting what’s been stored in harder to reach spaces.

Less Is More

Be ruthless about what comes in your front door.

Whether it’s a well-intentioned gift, hand-me-downs from a neighbor or a Marshall’s find you didn’t know you needed (you don’t)—ensure everything that crosses your threshold is wanted, useful and supports your goals. Take time to understand your body type and what style makes you feel the most confident - then stick to that!

Find The Hidden Space

There is always more space then you think!

A fast track to more space is to add an over the door shoe organizer to your closet door. And use it for more then just shoes - scarves, cover-ups, ball caps, flip flops and clutches can be easily accessible in this simple solution. Want more space? Consider adding acrylic jewelry pegs to the sides of cabinets or shelves.

Add A Ladder

Often times closets have so much virtual space that is under utilized. Make those spaces work for you by adding a ladder to access high spaces. Place less frequently used items in baskets on higher shelves and consider storing out of season hats on high hooks.

Make it Easy to Move Things On

Put a “Donate” bin in your closet (as well as all key areas of the home that tend to collect unwanted items). This will allow you to move unneeded items from your every day space right away. Make a calendar alert to take donations to your local drop-off monthly or quarterly.

Set Your System

The biggest key to success is setting up habits and routines that support your new system. Designate time to consider daily, weekly and monthly routines that will support the sustainability of your newly organized space.

Create A Seasonal Rotation

Consider moving out of season items to less accessible shelves or to weathertight totes in an attic or crawl space. This will allow you the opportunity to keep only what you need right infront of you.

Your closet is an intimate space full of possibility! It holds who you are, were and who you hope to be. Imagine walking into your closet with the feeling that you are shopping in a boutique filled with only your perfect size, style and coloring.

Life is too short not to feel amazing about what you put on everyday and everything in your closet.

To support you as you create a personally curated closet we’re hosting a FREE 4 Day Master Closet Cleanse (starting this Monday August 3rd). A free virtual challenge we developed to help you organize your Master Closet and keep it organized.

It won’t be your typical organizing challenge. We’re partnering with Mindset Coach Kylie Clayborne, to help you carefully curate a closet that is organized, streamlined AND is filled with your favorite items that make you feel confident!
