Closet Cleanse Challenge Day 1 : Categorizing

Congratulations on starting this challenge! We’re so grateful you are here and are thrilled to make some big changes over the next four days!

Your closet is an intimate space full of possibility! It holds who you are, were and who you hope to be. This challenge is designed to help you sweep the corners of your closet and mind to create and choose with intention.

We are here to help you!  We have joined forces to bring the best of what we know to keep you organized and feeling amazing!

Here’s How It Works:

Each day you will see three sections:

1) Create the mindset: To set the framework for the day Kylie will guide us through a mindset shift.

2) The Organizational Solution: Our Graceful Spaces Team will introduce the organizational solution.

3) The Action Steps (these will be your tactical step-by-step actions): Click the link for each day to find the step-by-step actions. Each step is a careful part of a big change so we encourage you to trust the process and look forward to big changes!

Start with finding 3 words to describe your current values  and 2 words to describe your style

Remember our values should reflect our lives and they may have changed since you last thought about them maybe even since quarantine. That’s ok - get on touch with what they are today! Think about the style you have and the style you really want to create. If you get stumped here, hop on Pinterest for 10- 15 mins (or longer if you want! I just get sucked in and  hours later I’m still there… oops! ;) Browse around and google some of the below words to see what you land on and what you resonate with. Choose your words wisely because we will start building around them. Follow Kylie .

Day 1: Categorizing

All impactful work must begin with taking an honest look at what is present. Day 1 is about categorizing everything in your closet. It allows you to identify the trends and habits that have been created in your home and will help you determine whether or not these systems are supporting your goals (likely, there are many that are not).

Nothing you notice will be wrong! These observations will simply lay the foundation for decisions you will make during this process.

Start your project by emptying your closet and creating clear categories. It’s worth the time! This action will allow you to see what you have, allows you to identify duplicates easily and also allows you to start identifying trends (you’ll be surprised what you learn about what you are keeping!!)

Glancing at items while they are in the closet just doesn't do the trick. There is a real magic to seeing items outside of their normal space. See the amount of items in each category and considering how often you use the items can also bring real clarity.

Often times this step will reveal shopping habits we didn’t know we had, unused or damaged items that are taking up space or unique habits that have been keeping us from the goal of organization and peace.

An exercise we use with clients is to consider the number of opportunities you have to use an item. As we all know, there are 365 days in a year and 30 days in a month… if you were to find 31 pairs of black leggings then you can know you will only be able to wear each pair of leggings only 12 times a year. Assuming you only wore black leggings every day!

Challenge yourself to understand the needs you have in your current life style and keep your very favorites for those occasions and activities.

Pro tip: Use sorting bins labeled with painters tape to keep your categories from bleeding together. Sorting bins can be clear plastic bins that you can use for all future organizing projects or, they can simply be Amazon boxes. Just be sure to clearly label all categories.

Download or print your action list for Day 1 here.

Today may be very simple and you may even be tempted to skip it. But, keep in mind that this can be one of the most impactful steps of the process! We know it can be tempting to jump right into purchasing new baskets and bins but remember, you are making a life change! Stick to the steps and we promise, the results will pleasantly surprise you.

You are doing it!! And we’re here for you!! You can count on us to answer your comments and questions below! So let us know how Day 1 went!!
