Two Zones to Support Spring Cleaning

It’s that time of year— spring cleaning is here. Make sure these two spaces are in order before you get started.

Where do you want to start?

The Laundry Room

It may surprise you to find out that the laundry room is one of our favorite spaces in a home. Why? Because it’s one of the most underutilized spaces that is full of so much potential.

Whether you’re working with a simple one cabinet system and a stackable washer/dryer or a lux laundry space featuring all the bells and whistles, there are so many systems and solutions for you to utilize to have a beautiful, functional laundry space.

What to include in your laundry room:

  • Basic laundry supplies (detergent, dryer sheets, fabric softener, etc.)

  • Cleaning supplies overflow (we recommend having at least 1-2 backups of all frequently used items)

  • Cleaning supplies used on a weekly and monthly basis (daily cleaning supplies should be stored under the kitchen sink)

  • Household items such as lightbulbs, batteries, and frequently used tools

  • If you have additional space you can also consider travel, pet, and medicine zones.

If you have a small laundry room, we recommend keeping that space just for laundry and cleaning supplies. Consider putting household essentials like batteries or dog items in another area the home. We highly recommend utilizing an Elfa over-the-door organizer for additional storage space.

A tip from Christina

When possible, we always recommend looking into having some sort of table top built into your laundry room. It can be very inexpensive. Have your local hardware store like Lowes or Home Depot provide a custom cut butcher block top. This will allow for additional functional decor space, as well as folding or temporary storage space.

Laundry Room Cabinets

Some laundry rooms come with tricky, deep cabinets! It becomes very easy to lose items at the back of the cabinet, which is why we recommend deep linus bins. Deep cabinets are best for your overflow cleaning items as well as paper goods, or larger items. Try utilizing drawers and shallow cabinets for smaller items or more every day items.

PRO TIP: If your laundry room tends to turn into the family catchall, consider adding labeled bins for donations or returns. We also love to add a bin labeled “return to owner” for any items that friends and family leave behind. Once a week, make a habit to empty these bins.

Elevate your space with these functional decor must-haves—

We’ve spent years finding beautiful, quality-made organizational items and functional decor. Here are a few of our favorites for laundry rooms and kitchen countertops.

Laundry Room Drawers

We have found that when spaces remain tidy and each item has a specific spot to be returned to there is significant improvement in sustainability. General piles of categories do not maintain as well. Small items like rags, sponges, leashes, collars, batteries, and glue guns should be kept in the drawer where they can be micro categorized.

The Kitchen Sink

Underneath the sink is a game about finding vertical space. Stackable drawers are an amazing option when it works. We typically use The Home Edit all-purpose drawers or tall fridge drawers that work well in narrow spaces. Always maximize the inside of a cabinet door! This is a great place for an affix or for a hook.

What to include under your kitchen sink:

  • Cleaning supplies used only a daily basis

  • Dish pods

  • Trash bags

  • Dish soap, brushes and sponges
