5 clutter traps in your Kitchen & how to avoid them!

Finding a little extra space in the kitchen can be the difference between function and frustration in your daily life. Whether or not you’re a gourmet chef, you still need to eat– and therefore use your kitchen! We encourage you to take those little steps to evaluate the areas in your space that might not be optimizing their potential.

There are a couple kitchen items that can rob you of valuable space– tupperware, junk drawers and medicine cabinets. If any of these words force an immediate cringe, we have an opportunity to analyze if we really need these items (or hold on to them because maybe the Queen will come for tea!) and to organize them in a more efficient way. This is the first step to being successful.

We picked 5 of the most often underutilized spaces in the kitchen to clean up today.

1 | TUPPERWARE

Most common problem:

a mountain of mix and match tupperware with missing lids

Solution :

consolidate your collection to 1 style (glass or plastic- personal preference). we suggest finding a brand that offers stackable options.

We Suggest:

2 | JUNK DRAWERS

Most common problem:

multiple drawers used as dumping grounds for unused items that don’t have a defined home

Solution:

limit one drawer in the kitchen to house those miscellaneous items you might need in the space such as pencils, a small screwdriver, notepad or lighter

We suggest :

3 | MEDICINE CABINETS

most common problem :

bottles and bottles of everything except what you need.

solution :

store meds by category (think stomach, head, cold & flu) and add a medicine caddy stocked with fever reducer, thermometer and Band-Aids to keep your medicines organized no matter where your nursing duties are needed.

pro tip: remove a layer from this caddy and pop it into your suitcase for easy to important meds when you travel!

We suggest:

4 | OVEN MITTS & MEASURING TOOLS

most common problem :

drawers filled to the top with mitts, measuring cups and spoons

solution :

most of these items have built in hooks or loops to use for hanging. don’t bother wasting valuable drawer or cabinet space when you can add a command strip to the inside of a cabinet and hang them!

pro tip: this is also a great time to edit down If you’re still holding on to stained, torn or just too many potholders.

We suggest:

5 | UNDER THE SINK

most common problem :

clutter trap of random cleaning supplies and miscellaneous items

solution :

be intentional. only cleaning products that clean the kitchen should be housed here. use a shelf system to double your cabinet space, and educate anyone else that might be accessing your supplies that this is for kitchen items only.

we suggest :

One thing to always remember when organizing is that organization should be part of your daily routine in order to impact your life and home in the most positive way.

It’s never about perfection, but instead it’s about continuing to ask ourselves

how we can create a home that supports our goals and lifestyle.
