5 Steps to a Rainbow Wardrobe

Who needs a pot of gold when the rainbow looks this pretty?

We love organizing closets by color. It’s practical—you can see everything you have, avoid buying duplicates and more easily plan your outfit each day—but it’s also so pretty.

When you’re organizing your closet, arranging your items by color is one of the last steps. It happens after you’ve pulled everything out and given your inventory a thorough edit. Pack up the seasonal items you plan to store so they’re out of the way. Now you have a sense of everything that’s going back—this is what you’re going to sort.

Here are 5 steps to creating a rainbow wardrobe:

ONE: Evaluate your space

Organizing by color is most dramatic on your hanging rods, but we also love this approach on open shelving and in drawers. Determine the space you want to organize by color and put the rest of your items away.

TWO: Categorize your inventory by zone

If your closet allows, we like to make hanging zones for dresses, tops and bottoms. Separate your inventory into zone-specific piles.

Three: Sort your zones by color

Working one zone at a time, move each item into a color-specific pile. When considering a print, go with the primary color.

four: Micro-categorize your colors by silhouette

Within each color family, plan to hang your items by silhouette, going lightest to heaviest. We recommend tanks first, followed by short sleeves, followed by long sleeves. Shorts to capris, followed by full length.

five: Put everything away, going lightest to darkest

To make your closet feel as bright and airy as possible, start with the whites and get darker from there. When we’re styling a closet in a client’s home, we go in this order:
